Cheviot Hills is a neighborhood of single-family homes located on the Westside of Los Angeles, California. Its name was derived from its gently rolling hills that are reminiscent of the Cheviot Hills range marking the border between England and Scotland. This is also what inspired the area’s Scottish street names.
Cheviot Hills Neighborhood Association represents about 1400 single-family homes, many of which were originally built from the 1920s through the 1940s. The houses feature a variety of traditional architectural styles. Particularly unique are the few remaining houses designed and built by the late Edmond J. Aiken. Sometimes referred to as English cottages or “witches’ houses,” these homes rest in charming landscapes with slanting thatched roofs, curving brick walkways, and thick mortar oozing between bricks and stonework.
In 2017, renowned architect Thom Mayne designed and built his own ultra-modern family home on the lot where Ray Bradbury had lived for over 50 years. Preservationists had lost the battle to save the Bradbury house but were mollified by the tribute to the writer incorporated in the unique entry gate that Mayne designed.

Cheviot Hills Park and Recreation Center, Palms Recreation Center, and Rancho Park Golf Course border the neighborhood. The parks offer tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, children’s playgrounds, a seasonal swimming pool, archery range, BBQ pits, and picnic tables. The Rec Centers house community rooms, kitchens, and indoor basketball courts, in addition to hosting numerous camps and classes for children and adults.
Rancho Park Municipal Golf Course features both an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole 3 par course.

Filming Locations
Situated between Century City (home to Fox Studios) and Culver City (home to Sony Pictures Studios), Cheviot Hills is a frequent site for the filming of motion pictures and television shows.
Examples dating to the 1920s and 1930s include the Laurel and Hardy films The Finishing Touch, Big Business, and Bacon Grabbers, among others. Later examples include The Ropers television series from the late 1970s and the movie Private School in 1983. A house on Cheviot Drive was used in “The Flying Nun” starring Sally Field and a house on Glenbarr Avenue was the home of “Nanny and the Professor”. On ABC-TV’s “Modern Family” the exterior of a home on Dunleer Drive is seen as Claire and Phil Dunphy’s residence.
